Covered Courtyard Area for Learning & Play
School Business Manager Hilary Gilbody, at The Peak School in High Peak, Derbyshire, contacted Living Space regarding a canopy for an unusually shaped courtyard area in the school. This would create a safe and sheltered outdoor learning and play area for the school’s residents. Not only was the area large, some 10.5m x 9.0m projection but also very complex.
There were a multitude of obstructions with many doors and windows to avoid and varying roof levels to negotiate. The canopy would cover the whole exposed courtyard so issues of access for cleaning the roof were to be considered. The school is situated within the picturesque Peak District National Park and therefore the canopy needed to adhere to strict planning regulations in respect of design and colour.

Rushey Mead Primary School Case Study
Covered Play Area & Outdoor Classroom
School Business Manager Wendy West, at Rushey Mead Primary School in Leicester, contacted Living Space regarding a covered play area and outdoor learning space for the children. This would help protect them from the weather and create a sheltered walkway between a number of classrooms.
Following a free site survey and detailed quotation, Living Space were presented with several challenges to overcome in order to achieve the perfect canopy solution for Rushey Mead Primary School. There were varying ground levels at the site meaning accurate fabrication and on site levelling would be crucial. There was also a particularly steep pitched roof with fall directly above the canopy area. In this instance the Living Space Structural Engineer advised raising the back height of the canopy and fitting a snow guard along the school roof eaves above the canopy area. All Living Space school canopies are individually assessed by a structural engineer in terms of their location to establish site specific wind and snow loadings.
